BUILD YOUR ROLE
Character Creation & Performance for Ages 13–17
You’ve learned the basics — now it’s time to build your own characters. Discover how to create believable, layered roles using your body, voice, emotions, and real-life teen experiences. Learn how status, relationships, and physicality shape who your character is — and how to bring them to life on stage or screen.
Term Focus: Application, consistency, depth
End-of-Term Outcome: Students can rehearse, sustain, and perform scenes and monologues with clear intention and believable character choices.
Core Concepts
What You’ll Learn:
Character Physicality — How posture, walk, gestures, and voice define who your character is (e.g., “slouching = insecure”, “fast talk = nervous”)
Given Circumstances — Build your character’s world: home, school, friends, secrets, dreams
Status & Power — Play high-status (bossy, confident) or low-status (shy, unsure) — and switch between them
Relationships & Reactions — How your character behaves with friends, rivals, teachers, crushes — and why
Emotional Range — Show complex feelings (e.g., “happy but hiding fear”, “angry but trying to stay calm”)
Character Journals — Write from your character’s POV — reveal secrets, fears, goals
Scene Work with Character — Perform short scenes using your fully developed role — no memorization needed

SELF TAPES AND SCREEN SKILLS
On-Camera Acting for Ages 13–17
Learn how to act truthfully on camera — whether you’re recording a self-tape for an audition, filming a school play, or preparing for a casting call. Master eye-line, framing, emotional subtlety, and how to make your performance feel real — even when you’re alone in your room. This is where you learn to stand out — not by shouting, but by being brave, truthful, and unforgettable.
Core Concepts
What You’ll Learn:
Screen Acting Basics — How to act for camera vs. stage: smaller, quieter, more truthful
Eye-Line & Framing — Where to look, how to frame yourself (close-up, medium, wide shot) — using your phone or tablet
Internalising Emotions — Show feelings with your eyes, not your voice — no big gestures needed
Self-Tape Setup — Lighting, background, sound, and camera placement — all with what you already have
Audition Techniques — Cold reads, slate, take direction, reset quickly, stay present
Brave Choices — How to take risks in your performance — not “safe”, but truthful and bold
Standing Out — How to be memorable without overacting — through specificity, honesty, and intention
